The players are from Jessamine and surrounding counties and include both professional and amateur musicians. The players range in age from 20-something to 70-something. The personnel list includes current and retired band directors, current and retired ministers, music students (some of whom have or do study with Miles Osland at UK), seminary students, lawyers, professors, and educators. The band’s conductor and musical director is Doug Oatley, a retired music educator and former bass trombone player for Stan Kenton. Doug is a professional musician, composer, arranger, and clinician who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the band. Chris Barbee, co-conductor and lead alto sax player, studied under Miles Osland at UK, and is currently a student at Asbury Theological Seminary. The band’s mission is: “To perform music that is fun to play and fun to listen to.” The band formed during the summer of 2004 and has played 12-15 concerts per year to very positive reviews.
